Episode 54: GoFundThisLiveCD!

Launched the gofundme for the Musicians, Mentors, & Barroom Heroes Highlights (& Low-Lifes…) album, which is in the works as we “speak”! Thank you so much to everyone who’s kicked in, youse rock. Click here to contribute! All album proceeds will go to WHIV 102.3 FM and the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic. Plus, you’ll get to hear live tunes/shenanigans from the past year of music and madcappery!

Several of the magicians who will appear on the album played live on last week’s show, we spun a bunch of local recorded tracks, we drank some seriously basic drinks (O’Doul’s out of a mug, vodka cran…) …a good time was had by all. Thank you to Rose for these photos I klepto’d 🙂

Episode 53 (S2): Club Foot / Peaches Joint Alumni Meeting

Great episode! Below is an extended playlist; wouldn’t have had time to play everything cuz we had so many guest/audience requests phoned/”phoned” in. Yay! Thanks to Elise, Corey, Jim, Natasha, and Dick for pickin tunes.

During the 7-8 hour, had my pal Richard “Dick Deluxe” Egner in the studio with his old friend Richard Marriott, founder of the Club Foot Orchestra. They talked about their work with that ensemble, a San Francisco-born, performance art-centric group that made a name for itself providing complex soundtracks to classic silent movies (check out their website here: http://www.clubfootorchestra.com/) and also played a couple of lovely duets! (I always love having brass instruments in the studio.) Big thanks to Elisabeth Beaird for taking photos of the Richards, and to Natasha Sanchez for this photo of Jim Sniff I klepto’d from a different episode, see below.

Episode 52 (S2): My Last Brain Cell is Called Custer

Fun 4-hr episode with a slew of familiar faces/guitars/etc back in the studio! The unofficial theme was, “Eh, fuck it,” but of course the actual theme was “?”.

Big thanks to Lili and Natasha for taking these pics! And this playlist is probably only 90% accurate (and maybe 60% in the correct order) because my brain spontaneously shut off approximately 75% of the way through the show. (Being away from New Orleans for a few months made me revert back to my natural state of being a perversely-early bird, plus the uptick in sobriety is always a jolt to the system….)

Episode 51 (S2): Mics, Open & Pizza

So wonderful to be back on-air for Season 2 during our new timeslot, 7-9pm every Thursday! Heard some words of… wisdom? from Pizza Mike and some killer original tunes from real, live locals including awesome first-time MMBRH playa’ Sean Markey, longtime favorite lurker/photographer/Buffa’s-open-mic-host extraordinaire Natasha Sanchez, and Checkpoint’s open mic host Jim Smith, who can now attend this show since it’s not on Sundays anymore! (Had a nice round-table discussion about open mics as well… tried to call Mike Darby to get his 2 cents, but apparently none of his cents had been going to his phone bill…)

MM&BRH BACK on Air- new time slot!

Good evening, faithful readers! We will be back on air TOMORROW, during our new time slot, 7-9pm every Thursday. Hurray! Featuring special guest Jim Smith (home of the Checkpoint’s open mic, which is on Sundays and always prevented his attending last season), long-time good time musician favorites & lurkers Natasha Sanchez, Emily Jarand, & more, and my high school friend, Nick Danger! Tune in, tune up, Toonsis, the driving cat.

MM&BRH Highlights CD *actually* in the works now!

I’ve been saying I’m going to do this for awhile, but (festering in Boston, freezing my ass off, doing mindless labor where I can listen to things at the same time) I’ve finally started/nearly finished going through the radio show recordings! (The ones that I have. 50% of them.)

So much nostalgia. So many amazing tracks. Such objectively-witty banter. Myself being painfully awkward. I’ve laughed and cried several times. I really want to thank everyone that came out and made Sunday nights so fun. The music and the banter seems to capture a real moment in New Orleans… I won’t go as far to say “history”, but everything is history I suppose. (“MM&BRH High Lights: The Champagne of History”)

Satellite Episode!

Not really, but I am guesting on my baby sister’s Monday night show on KUSF 90.3 FM San Francisco tonight at 7:30 pm west coast time. Stream hurrrr….

Pic from the Five Finger Tavern in Inyokern, CA last March (although this was also the vibe of our Thanksgiving…) Little town that smelt of cat piss and sadness and chemicals from whatever plant was nearby–a few straggly travelers and meth partakers and sad military men lurking about–but the stars were so heartbreakingly beautiful. This pub (and that pub-tendress) were definitely the only games in town. Also it was that fellow on the right’s birthday.

Episode 50: THE LAST STRAW (Season Finale)

Oh lawd!

Finally getting the playlist and pictures up from our season finale a week ago. What a night! We ran from 8pm to almost 1:30am and had over 50 guests in the studio, and various others tuning in from near and far. There were several newcomers (including my best&most-clever frand Brady, the notorious “Whalevo Rob”, and Jim Smith of Checkpoint Charlie’s Acoustic Open Mic), a bunch of old-comers, one dog, one child, a lot of delicious food, a lot of gas station food, Hair-on-the-Air (victim: me), Amber bringing a SPOCK candle (!!!) and Patrick Cooper announcing he was going to play “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” seconds after I’d cued up that album on my laptop.

We heard tons of local tunes (mostly live, a few …un-live? dead? undead? ) in the company of an ever-charmingly-diverse crew dear friends, sworn enemies, and neighbors. Our pals at United Bakery Records came in to announce the fabulous shows they’re putting together this holiday season, and we even got a surprise visit at the very end from our illustrious leader, MarkAlain Dery! (emojis) It’s been a great year, and I’ll miss y’all like the dickens. See ya on the flip side! Semi-accurate playlist etc. below… there was a rough draft, then people started shouting requests… you know how it is.

Episode 49: Saturday Mourning

Bizarre bonus installment, in which my OCD about reaching 50 episodes before going on winter siesta kicks in–not to mention my happy/sadness about leaving New Orleans for awhile–and I slink into the studio creepily early Saturday mo(u)rning to play some of my favorite weepers. (I can’t usually exercise/exorcise them on Sunday nights, because y’all guests are just too much fun….)

Episode 48: The Mikes in Our Lives

Former MM&BRH guest tuning in from Nevada

Hark, such brain music and brain words gracing the airwaves last night! We heard from  several of the talented folks slated to perform at this month’s Homegrown variety show, spun some brand-new tracks by Noggin (whose own Amber Mouton got her hair victimized by Stacey Kelly Styling such that Spock himself would blush to see it…), and listened to some sawweeet live tunes from Natasha Sanchez, Jeremy Joyce, and the Sabertooth Swingers. Amidst the music, we were treated to some fiery opinions about Halloween courtesy of Pizza Mike and tackled such burning questions as:

Beatles vs Stones?

Star Wars vs Star Trek?

Kirk’s Svelt Musculature vs Capt Picard’s Shiny Bald Head? (…or Voyager….I guess…)

And I ask you:

Chevy vs Ford?

Chevy vs Florida?

Pizza Mike, Trumpet Mike, or Money Mike? (Which Mike is *your* Mike?)
