Episode 57: Guru Revue

Live music, flowers, chit chat and more! That was one of those episodes that felt like a well-oiled machine…everyone efficiently performed 2 excellent songs, nothing really inconvenient happened, we were cleared out in time for Steve to start on time, I got introduced to some new music, Gianni took these winsome pics (and videos which I will slap on here later) …A+!

ALSO! We are having a Crawfish Boil at Checkpoint Charlie’s on 4/22 (Sunday) to fund the live album! Live music by a bunch of our regular lurkers, crawfish simmered by Brooks Webb & Michael Darby, laundry right adjacent. Cmon out!

“Like A Rolling Stone” – Bob Dylan

Lauren Miller of United Bakery Records (also a fellow WHIV deejay) comes in (from the other room) to talk about the 2nd Annual United Bakery Revue to be held at Marigny Studios on the Tuesday and Wednesday between Jazz Fest weekends. Since we aren’t on-air anymore, this is a call to action to come on out and hear the great array of local artists they have on the docket to play/record a live album. Check it out here! https://www.facebook.com/events/805627366309370/  (Two of the artists who were featured on last year’s Revue compilation–the Maggie Belle Band and the Tumbling Wheels–will play Jazz Fest this year, and that album will be sold at the Jazz Fest Store. Git yerself a copy!) All artists on the United Bakery Records Revue albums were culled from the group of artists who frequented the United Bakery Gallery (cool, quirky, living room-esque performance venue in the 7th ward) during the time it was in operation. Hooray! We spun a bunch of tunes from artists on the lineup:

“See Right Through” – Max and the Martians (plays Revue 5/1)

“Beasts of Burgundy” – Squirrel Nut Zippers new album. (Dr. Sick–Justin Carr of the Zippers’ solo project–plays Revue 5/2. You can also see the Squirrel Nut Zippers play Tipitina’s 4/29 with Gal Holiday, which is also Vanessa “Gal” Holiday’s birthday!)

“Pothole Heart” – Luke Spurr Allen (plays Revue 5/2. Love this song “right from the start”… ha. That line’s so simple but it gets me.)

Public Apology to Pizza Mike for initially failing to appreciate just how corny Lawrence Welk is.

“Look In My Eyes” – The Goods LIVE Jillian Kay (who’s been at the station before with the awesome folks of Homegrown and played some of her tunes solo) returns with Stephen Baldini and Simon aka Instant Jubilation, two of the members of her band The Goods. What a great sound! First episode having an accordion or melodica on the show, second having a djembe, aprx. 54th time having a guitar 🙂 Really impressed by these guys, they’re doing something different, and it sounds great.

“Never Know” – The Goods LIVE

“Sunny Moon” – The Cat Empire. The “world” sound inspired me to once again regale you with one of my longtime favorite bands.

“You’re Gone” – Baby Boy Bartel & The Boys. Thank to Matt Bartels for hanging out and sharing this cool track!

“I’m Falling” – Troi Adkinson LIVE Great local singer-songwriter who can be found playing the Neutral Ground, open mics around the city, etc. Thanks to Troi and his wife Phyllis for bringing snacks and flowers <3 <3 <3

“Brain Candy” – Troi Adkinson LIVE

“Goin Coastal” – Jean Baguette LIVE Jean in the house! Welcome to the world to her new grandson, born in France the other night <3 (also, I love songs about crazy neighbors…)

“Hatchet Man” – Jean Bayou LIVE PS You can see Jean and Troi play at our Crawish Boil! April 22nd Checkpoints.

“My Babe” – (Reprise) Judy Hill feat. Jamey St. Pierre, Ted Hefko, Bob Worth, & Rory Collins. (once-)aLIVE. Hahahaha played an old recording of MMBRH ep. 33… so weird talking over, yelling at, and laughing with myself. Sometimes I’m impressed with my skillz as a radio talker. Sometimes I make myself want to amputate my own ears. Anyways, hear this track on the live album I’m making!! Due out September, if it gets funded. (Not a call to action, but… gofundme.com/mmbrh.)

“The Roofer” – Ted Hefko off his brand-new almost-released-ish album, Gas Station Guru, which rocks. We also had a great on-air conversation about gas stations (which, if you know you me, you’ll know hold dear place in my heart along with Checkpoint Charlie’s, breathing, etc.) Thank you oodles for the vinyl version, also yall, check out the cover art by Curtis Casados! Saw him at the Abbey last night and he explained about all the Easter eggs he hid…

“Ride Me Down Easy” – Ted Hefko LIVE covering Billy Joe Shaver, acoustic version of a track you can find on the album.

“Superhero” – Jim Smith LIVE Yay Jim Smith! This just in- he will appear for sure on our live album, if it gets to be made. Donate here! (All proceeds go to good causes: the Musicians’ Clinic and WHIV 102.3)

“Strange Me Stranger You” – Jim Smith LIVE (I am probably stranger than you.)
