Episode 56: 15,000 Seconds of Live Radio

http://www.offbeat.com/news/video-washboard-lissa-nervous-duane/

This came up in my facebook memories <3. Anyways, special extended edition last Thursday as we were covering for Steve Williams’ show 9-11pm as well. Thank you to all you new friends and old ones for tuning in, tuning up, hanging out, etc., many thanks to Sharappa for all these videos and Natasha for the photons! The GoFundMe page to produce a live Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes album from the last season can be found here at gofundme.com/mmbrh ; please consider chipping in! (Or sharing with your social mediaites.) Half the proceeds will go to WHIV 102.3 FM New Orleans, the other half to the New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic in honor of Washboard Lissa.

Playlist – or close to it. (Do correct me if I’m wrong… we went off the rails and I lost my notes and the recording failed :/ But, a good time was had by all…)

[track 1]” – from a home-burned Washboard Lissa CD I found in my car, labelled “Lissa & Scott”

“Plastic Jesus” – Gal Holiday version

“Coastline” – Neil Young. Am on a ‘Hawks & Dove’ kick.

“Je M’Suis Fait Tout Petit”/”Back To Black” mashup – Sabertooth Swing. Love how these guys mess with genre. Great local jazz band, and we had Romain in the studio with Gina talking about their show/ blues dance lessons at the Mudlark.

“Don’t Wake Me Til It’s Over” – Gina Leslie LIVE, doing a killer Willie Nelson cover. Catch her with Damn Gina every Sunday at Sydney’s, and with the new 7 piece, Mean Gina!

Gina Leslie LIVE covering Willie Nelson (girllll, tell me what dem tracks were! …lost my set list. again.)

“They Can’t Take That Away From Me” – Billie Holiday

“Bang Bang” – Jessie J., Ariane Grande, & Nikki Minaj. “Let’s do an abrupt turn around.” … too early, in retrospect.

“Set Out Runnin’” – Neko Case

Ashley Beach comes in to talk about the Vision Fest, an event full of music and healing arts to benefit the Louisiana Himalaya Society. Hope you could make it out last weekend!

“I Can Live” – Will Dickerson LIVE Welcome to the mayhem! Great local guitarist/songwriter that you can catch at regularly at Rare Form.

“The Call of Your Heart” – Will Dickerson LIVE

“Wild Thing” – The Troggs

“Shine” – Dana Abbott Band

“Arlene” – Jamie Lynn Vessels

***Hair Cut! That isn’t the buzz of dead air you hear, it’s Gianni getting his hair shaved by Shawn Williams LIVE on-air. Stayed tuned for the voodoo doll…. (To the tune of “Stuck in the Middle With You” by Stealer’s Wheel. Has anybody seen ‘Reservoir Dogs’? Hahha.)

“Before the Sun Can Rise” – Rory Collins LIVE Great to have Rory back on the show playing some killer originals!

“Should I Tell You” – Rory Collins LIVE

“You Wouldn’t Like Me” – JP Landy covering Tegan and Sarah LIVE So awesome and unexpected! See below

“Airplane” – JP covering Langhorn Slim LIVE “It wouldn’t be this show if I didn’t do a Langhorne Slim tune” <3

“Dominoes” – Natasha Sanchez LIVE Love this tune! Makes me pre-emptively nostalgic for the halycon days of today. Reminds me of Alex McMurray’s songwriting in that it gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling about drinking with your good time buddies in these New Orleans bars that we use like living rooms. (This one’s about Circle Bar… where we saw Alex McMurray last night, incidentally, and I once again failed at ‘not drinking’. Full ‘circle’! bahaha.)

“Phantom Limb” – Alex Bosworth LIVE Take a listen below; gave me goosebumps!

“Home Sweet New Orleans” – Alex Bosworth, new collection of original tunes!

“Captain” – Lonesome Leash. New (to me) song by him that I’m obsessed with. About half of his songs sound too much like a klezmer organ grinder (or something) for my taste, the other half are completely captivating. One of my all-time favorite lyricists. Such nuanced ways of describing his own internal landscape, the hardships of trying to ford whatever voids to reach other people, the feeling of being trapped under one’s own skin, etc. Also that subtle shift in the arrangement! emojis emojis emojis.

“Lonesome Leash” – Why Are We Building Such A Big Ship. (The crappy youtube version I always play cuz it’s the only one I can find….) (And I did list this correctly; Walt McClements played with Big Ship ^ and then took the name of his solo project from one of those tunes.)

“Give It Up” – Nathalie Mae. Thanks for joining the fray and bringing in this awesome album, ‘Run To You’ 🙂

“Baby I Love You” – Ryan Adams

“Stranger” – Shawn Williams LIVE. Song debut! Followed by near-debut below, both spellbinders. Bahaha this one actually made me tear up a little, probably because I was too sober. Shawn’s played tons of her material over the course of this show, and I’m really impressed by her skillful writing across so many different non-genres ( ,” I wrote, grudgingly 🤣.) The songs are haunting and/or catchy across the board, and weird, but in an awesome way. (They don’t necessarily go where you expect them to, but the result is always easy on the ears rather than jarring.) Original songwriting, hooray!

“Can’t Forget” – Shawn LIVE (listen below)

“Hold You Tonight” – Darby LIVE Darby is finally playing live in the studio! He is so goddamned talented. WHY did this episode not record?!

“Strong Man” – Darby LIVE

“-another Darby tune]” – Darby LIVE what was it? I did a terrible job keeping track of this episode, even for me…

“Blank Space” – Ryan Adams covering Taylor Swift, DEAD

Sesame Street Song – Natasha Sanchez, acappella in her operatic puma voice! LIVE

Excessive banter, unconditionally hilarious

“Happy Birthday (To No One)” – Everyone LIVE “Happy birthday is one of the hardest songs to sing!” …and then we demonstrated. Seriously, who wrote this shit? It’s in nobody’s vocal range.

More banter. We are so goddamned funny!!!

“Ooh La La” – Faces. You had to listen to us debate for several minutes what this song was and who it was by, etc. Worth it though, non? Claro que si.
