Episode #37: Lady-Party After-Party & the Resting “Ancient Maya Face”

No automatic alt text available.

A particularly insane evening at 102.3 WHIV FM! Featuring all sorts of unlikely parties partying together. Old hats, new hands, no dogs, neat tricks, etc. The inception of “Hair on the Air”, I think our greatest gimmick yet, because I have a great face for radio and clearly need my hair in hot rollers while wearing headphones. Ha! Check out Stacey Kelly Styling, y’all.

And of course we heard some great tunes, both live and recorded. Thanks to everyone who hung out and tuned in! Every Sunday night, folks. (As close-knit as we sound on-air, many of us just met each other and/or actually hate each other, so you’re more than welcome to come join the fray. 🤣 I won’t make you use the microphone.) Also, consider becoming a station member at whivfm.org / .com! Community radio, every little bit helps!

Episode #36: They Call Him “Bonedaddy”

Mayhem + live original music! We’ve got Lane “They Call Him Bonedaddy” (and his awesome wife Jamie) and Red DeVecca on bass (if you tune in on the regular you’ve heard Red’s not-family-friendly tales of days of yore playing with Ernie K-Doe, Professor Longhair, and Snooks Eaglin…), one of my earliest/favoritist New Orleans friends Isabella Morrison, famous Big Daddy’s lurker and karaoke maestro James Nettles, and all those other people I extracted drunken promises from last night! I believe Nervous Duane said something about reading science fiction excerpts. And this just in, songster Jamey St Pierre and his daughter  And, apparently Shawn Williams is still alive and will be rolling out of bed to join us too! (#BlameWanda.) Plus, you! (Get at me, this is an all-inclusive fiesta, and my car is full of booze.)

A special thanks to Pizza Mike for the gas station food, which is “a new concept” to him. Adieu, Lili Dove, thank you for the little black dress, and be back soon!

Episode #33: Poaching From The Mint

Lawd! What a crew. I harassed Jamey St Pierre and Ted Hefko to be on the show after an intimate performance with Dick Deluxe at the US Mint, and all these other great folks showed up too. Thank you so much to everyone that played, read, chatted, took pictures, refrained from barking, and lurked around in such a way as to cultivate the warm, wacky atmosphere that makes Sunday nights at 102.3 WHIV FM such a blast. Thank you Josh for these beautiful pics!

Episode #31: Picking Up Guests On Street Corners

Another wacky, educational episode of Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes! New friends and dear/weird friends. Live music, not-live music, bar stories about not-live people, fine literature, good company, company, $2 chips. Thank you bunches to Eric Ess, Nervous Duane, Karen Childs, Stephen Medina, Carrie Anne Rose, Ashley Rice, Shawn Williams, and Cousin Andrew Jonathan for hanging out! (See Karen Childs’ video below!)

Episode #29: Bob Bateman and the Musical Intros

When you ask Bob Bateman to introduce the people he brought with him to your radio show (“Mike Marks and Sweet Dee”, you learn eventually), and you get this convoluted explanation of how they met (see video below.) Ha! Awesome. (Also when you are capable of controlling your spastic laughter and acting like a professional.) Crazy fun night with these folks, Jimi Palacios, Martha Francis, and Pizza Mike.
