Fun 4-hr episode with a slew of familiar faces/guitars/etc back in the studio! The unofficial theme was, “Eh, fuck it,” but of course the actual theme was “?”.
Big thanks to Lili and Natasha for taking these pics! And this playlist is probably only 90% accurate (and maybe 60% in the correct order) because my brain spontaneously shut off approximately 75% of the way through the show. (Being away from New Orleans for a few months made me revert back to my natural state of being a perversely-early bird, plus the uptick in sobriety is always a jolt to the system….)
Playlist –
“On the Radio” – Regina Spektor (We started off last week with a song about radio, why not do it again?)
“Tain’t Nobody’s Business” – Aurora Nealand & the Royal Roses version. [First release by Anna Meyers and Original Memphis Five (1922)](See show theme. And catch the Roses every Monday night at Maison!)
“Do Right” – Dana Abbott Band. (Another great local act! Catch ‘em weekends at Cafe Negril. I love the way these playlists develop, organically…)
“Wild and Blue” – Ron Hotstream & the Mid City Drifters. (Three cheers for Ron & Tina for being excellent Lower D drinking pardner weirdos in addition to killer musicians.)
“All the Small Things” – Blink-182. (Because forcing mainstream 90s music into the lineup makes total sense with this show’s premise.)
“My Humps” – Black Eyed Peas. (Ditto playing “My Humps” two weeks in a row. Jajajaja. My show, my rules… my humps.)
“Bonzo Goes to Bitburg” – The Ramones (the only song that makes me at all enthusiastic about running, for some reason.)
“We Don’t Need Another Superstar – Troi Atkinson LIVE (Delighted to have Troi on the show for the first time! What awesome tunes.)
“My Eyes On You” – Troi LIVE
“Never Let You Go” – Third Eye Blind (More 90s. I was born in them, and my birthday was the day before. So it actually does make sense.)
“Palaces of Montezuma” – Grinderman (Laura on-air a few months ago, smugly: “I really like this song, but he’s totally trying to sound like Nick Cave.” Somebody else: “Grinderman is a Nick Cave project.”)
“What You Do” – Jean Bayou LIVE (Always great to have the former & longtime President of the Songwriters Association of Washington CD in the house! Love her tunes.)
“The Hot Springs” – Jean Geyser LIVE
“Middle Cyclone” – Neko Case (I didn’t even mean to put the cyclone song right after the hot spring song, but I would’ve meant it.)
“Ain’t No Child No More” – Lil’ Band O’ Gold (Localish band, out of Lafayette, killer musicians all over this album ‘The Promised Land’. Occasionally have to shake it up from playing my favorite track, ‘Spoonbread’.)
“Open the Door, Homer” – Bob Dylan & The Band (Baffled as to why the title says “Homer” yet over & over the narrator implores, “open the door, Richard.” Maybe he’s better with faces. At any rate, one of my favorite summer driving tunes.)
“Cowgirl” – #WhoNat LIVE (Loved this tune! Also, we need to come up with a title for Natasha on this show. “Co-horst” is taken already. Ideas?)
“The Pharaohs” – Neko Case (Cowgirls, pharaohs… doctors, lawyers, indian chiefs)
“Baby’s Gone” – Mike Darby & the House of Cards. (Darby!! Unconditionally exciting to have him milling about the studios. No weird game animals this time, but he did bring this old live recording from when Blue Nile was still the Dream Palace. Hooray!)
“Shenandoah” – Bob Dylan [“a traditional folk song of uncertain origin”] (The first of 2 Dylan covers on this list. Dylan covering others, that is, not others covering Dylan. Well, I don’t know if it’s technically a cover if you don’t know who you’re covering, per se.. . If a tree falls in a forest… Anyways. I just love the choir.)
“Stars Fell on Alabama” – Billie Holiday (Pairs well with making sweet, sweet love. Preferably out-of-doors. In Alabama. Via record player. Bring a very long extension cord, so the neighbors don’t see. This isn’t even funny Laura. Stop typing.)
“Get On Top” – Tim Buckley (…and then this one comes on, and the mood shifts. Off ‘Greetings from L.A.”, one of my fave albums. All 7 tracks are great. For certain activities. Playing on the radio, I mean.)
“If I Were A Carpenter” – Leon Russell (I think I remembered to fade out his creepy panting at the end…)
“Oil City” – Patrick Cooper LIVE (Loved this new Patrick Cooper tune! One of my faves yet.)
“Courtesy of Valerie” – Patrick LIVE (Since we are on-air earlier now, we look forward to having Valerie the person in the studio with us!)
“Fishies” – The Cat Empire (I love the way the colors of this song look in my mind. Also makes me want to go to one of those Cajun dancing bars right on the bayou.)
“Mother Blues” – Ray Wylie Hubbard (fun songs spotify recommends to me.)
“Atlantic City” – The Band [written by Bruce Springsteen.] (The Band is one of my favorite bands [and my all-time favorite ‘Band’…], and this is one of my favorite tunes by them.)
“Thunder Road” – Jennifer Callan & Mike Dill LIVE [Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band] (Great to have these two back, and to have Jennifer singing again! Such pipes.)
“Brokedown Palace” – Jennifer & Mike LIVE [Grateful Dead]
“Satisfied” – Lissa Driscoll (Missed dearly.)
“Chase Me” – Crossing Canal (Patrick Cooper & Ruby Ross. Those harmonies!!)
“Specialmen Boogie” – King James & the Specialmen (Best party in town on a Monday night 🙂 )
“Man-Sized Wreath” – REM (#WhoNat’s ‘fuck it’ pick. Not to be confused w/ Wreath-Sized Man. Which is my favorite size of man.)
“Won’t Get Fooled Again” – The Who
“Watch What You Say” – Lili Dove LIVE (Dusts off an old one of her tunes as an “eh, fuck it” challenge. Thumbs up!!)
“I Wanna Throw A Party But I’m Broke” – Lili LIVE (Relatable! I told the musicians/lurkers to BTOB this go-round, haha.)
“Leave” – Shawn Williams LIVE (Going to be on upcoming record, as is song below!)
“Gettin’ Rowdy Tonight” – Shawn LIVE (Spoiler alert: “Not”)
“Your Cheatin’ Heart” – Dick Deluxe & Carolyn Broussard LIVE [Hank Williams, OG] (Love when these two get together!)
“As Long As I’m Going With You” – Carolyn feat. Dick LIVE (One of my fave Carolyn tunes, great ukulele guitar combo.)
“Cold to the Touch” – Dick feat. Carolyn LIVE (Brand new Dick tune! Contrast with song I played haphazardly on guitar for him the other day–which made me realize how hopeless I will probably be at guitar, always–“I want so much (and I wantcha) / Warm to the touch (gonna haunt ya)”… Be on the lookout for “Tepid to the Touch”, a forthcoming Deluxe/DeFazio collaboration. Lukewarm lullabies for your listening pleasure…)
“Dink’s Song” – Bob Dylan [traditional. first recording by Lomax in 1909, so says wikipedia. Gah I want to be an ethnomusicologist when I grow up]. (This, I think, is my absolute favorite Dylan track, out of so many Dylan songs that I know and love, despite the fact that his writing is what I like best about him and he didn’t even write this one.)
“Regarding Ascending the Stairs” – Lady Lamb (Train of thought: another song with ‘Arkansas’ in lyrics. Side-tangent: I really like a lot of her songs/lyrics, but a biggg pet peeve of mine is when artists force words and sentences to fit into incongruent lines of music, and then the cadence of speech is all f’d up. And she does this noticeably often, at least to my simpleton ears. This is why I love Leonard Cohen so much. It doesn’t just rhyme, every syllable is perfect. Note to self: put him on list next week…)
“Beneath the Rain” – Alex McMurray (Always one of my top fave local singer-songwriters. Evokes–in an easy, not-heavy-handed way–some of the soul-deep feelings one feels whilst wandering around local bars whose names we know, hanging out with the usual characters, etc.)
Outro (haha) –
“On the Radio” – Regina Spektor
🎵 this is how it works: you’re young until you’re not you love until you don’t you try until you can’t you laugh until you cry you cry until you laugh and everyone must breathe until their dyin’ breath 🎵 🎵 (....no, this is how it works. you peer inside yourself you take the things you like you try to love the things you took and then you take that love you made and stick it into some- someone else’s heart pumpin’ someone else’s blood.) 💙 🎵
