Episode #7: Red DeVecca & the Old Blues Guys

Seasons greetings, internet! Here is a much belated playlist from the last episode of Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes I aired before Christmas: “Red DeVecca and the Old Blues Guys.” (Next up: Curtis Casados!) Red was such a wealth of experience and knowledge and colorful stories… all those fallen giants he’s laid down the bassline for over the years, and it was especially great to hear about the members of that generation that are still going strong. (Alabama Slim! Little Freddie King! J. Monque’D! James Winfield! Red DeVecca! etc etc etc. Go see them! Treasure them!) [Another interesting fact, “Red DeVecca” is my second-favorite name to say aloud, right after “Olivia de Havilland”.]

Bands associated with the Mermaid Lounge, (freewheelin’ Warehouse District venue & alternative/experimental/punk/ everything else hub) closed down back in 2004. What with last weekend’s Mermaid Lounge Reunion at the Truck Farm. (And a few tunes at end by people like Neil Young andFiona Apple who did not play the Mermaid but clearly missed out…)Thank you Marc Paradis and Smitti Supab for coming in and sharing your [insert here, something other than “Mermaid Tales”…]

Episode #5: Pizza Mike Delivers

Heavens! It seems that I’ve missed the boat on several memorable experiences of New Orleans living, if you’re to believe the rabble at the station with me for Sunday night’s episode of Musicians, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes (semi-thematic spotify playlist attached.)
Said experiences include:

1.] Stumbling out of BJs, having drunkenly forgotten my gun at the gun check behind the bar (again)

2.] Bird’s-eye balcony views of bare-knuckled boxing matches in the back of the Saturn Bar…. {continued…}

Episode #4: Create a Disturbance in Your Mind

What a fun night. Thanks so much for the stories, shenanigans, and spontaneous songwriting/performance opportunities, Judy Hill, James Andrews, Darrell, Diane, and Pizza Mike! And for making me laugh so hard I feel like I can pretend I have abs again, for a minute. The icing on the cake was when Pizza had to wash his shoes in Bayou St. John.

The ostensible theme of this week’s playlist was “local bands I love to go see live that I haven’t yet played” (sub-theme, for this week only: “what is available on Spotify?”) But if you’ve seen me stalking around your gigs and you’re not on here, it’s probably because said list is about four times as long as one show, TBC.

Episode #3: Nervous Chatter & the Sheiks of Arabi

Image may contain: 2 people, people standing, sunglasses and outdoor

Ok! After wading through the carnage of Sunday night’s installment of Musician, Mentors, and Barroom Heroes, this was our playlist, approximately. (The second half of the program mostly consisted of people frantically yelling at me to find songs I’d never heard of, me cursing out various electronic devices, everybody staying properly hydrated, and all of us getting distracted by the best [i.e. dirtiest] stories once we were off-air. Ah, would that the FCC would take a holiday…)
