Last night’s playlist from Musicians, Mentors, & Barroom Heroes on 102.3 WHIV FM! Local and non-local picks and dedications by/to patrons at the Old Arabi Bar and the Ooh Poo Pah Doo, also from miscellaneous musically-knowledgeable people that frequent the same haunts as I do. Including me. Sundays from 9-11 p.m., thanks for tuning in!
1. “Nothing But Time” – Royal Fingerbowl. (Local band.) Michael Darby pick. Songs to whittle to ducks to, all day, in the bar. (Less vindictive than runner-up duck-whittling anthem, “No Time,” by the Guess Who.)
2. “Stay In My Corner” – The Arcs. Spotify’s Discover Weekly is sometimes on point. Tony Hollums
3. “Voodoo Cowboy” – The Cat Empire. Australian band. Extremely varied body of work. I love all of it.
——
4. “Remedy” – Maggie Belle Band. For the gang at the Old Arabi Bar, where this band is a universal favorite. Catch them there… next month? Word is they always bring food
5. “It’s Bad You Know” – R.L. Burnside. Pick from Tom at the Old Arabi. Excellent song to drive away from your problems to.

6. “Wide Lovely Eyes” – Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. Linda Cassidy pick. One of my favorite songs. You might remember it from walking around Montreal all night with your headphones in and feeling needlessly sorry for yourself, if you were in my head circa 2014. (But I hope you weren’t. For both of our sakes.)
7. “Wolf Like Me” – TV On The Radio. I wish I wrote this.
8. “I Wanna Be Your Dog” – Joan Jett and the Blackhearts. Stooges cover. Happy birthday Big Red!
9. “Waiting on the Gin to Hit Me” – the Iguanas. Catch them Wednesdays at the Circle Bar. HBD again Big Red! (This is also my current psychological status.)

10. “Rivers and Roads” – The Head and The Heart. For The SANDRA @the Sandra. I miss you all! xoxo Please green card marry me. All of you. Stat.
11. “Fortunate Son” – Cat Power. Amazing CCR cover. #topical
12. “One” – Johnny Cash. For Boom and the other Johnny Cash fans at the Old Arabi.
13. “Clocks” – Coldplay. For those tourists who wanted to hear Coldplay at the Ooh Poo Pah Doo. Ha.
14. “Mixed Up Shook Up Girl” – Mink DeVille. Sarah Lavine pick. Mink de Ville lived in New Orleans briefly in the 90s, so this is technically a local pick.

15. “I Can’t Stand the Rain” – Ann Peebles. James Nettles pick. How f-ing awesome is this song.
16. “Gold Lion” – Yeah Yeah Yeahs
17. “El Desierto” – Lhasa de Sela – For Nervous Duane. He performed and recorded with de Sela when he was living in Montreal. She sings in Spanish, French, and English, all of it is heartrending.
18. “LA Woman” – The Doors. Always good.
19. “Silvio” – Bob Dylan. A great remedy for when you start hating everybody.
—–
20. “Syncopated Troll” – Tom McDermott. One of my favorite New Orleans piano players, as well as of that guy in the hat who came into the Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar last week. I confess, I chose this particular track because of the title. Congrats on the upcoming limerick book!
21. “No Mountain” – The Cat Empire. (Is Auld Lang Syne copyrighted?)
—–
Rest in Peace:
22. “Last Train” – Allen Toussaint. Always.
23. “If I Were a Carpenter” – Leon Russell, who passed away yesterday. Best version of this song, in my opinion. Minus the heavy breathing at the end.
24. “You’ve Got Me Singing” – Leonard Cohen. Grew up near where I lived in Montreal and passed away this week. So sad. He released his final album last month, called ‘You Want it Darker’. This is one of his not-dark tunes.

25. “Bird On a Wire” – k.d. lang. Leonard Cohen cover. Also covered by the The Neville Brothers, Johnny Cash, and others.
